Overview of Style: House music is a genre of electronic dance music created by club DJs in Chicago in the early 1980s. It takes its name from the Warehouse, a Chicago club where DJs first played their records to large audiences. Early house music is generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms mainly provided by drum machines, off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displays several characteristics similar to disco, it is more electronic and minimalistic.
